This really sums up how I feel, damn. I basically never use or interact with social media in general but I don't understand how people have the energy to stir up so much drama all the time.

It's become this vicious circle where I log in here only to see a handful of basic shitposts and endless threads about the most recent thing that got people endlessly riled up? How many truly good faith, active, post-or-comment-every-day users do we have at this point?

I'd say I feel guilty but while I'm sad to not have a source of chapo content anymore, at the same time why take the effort to make good content if some bullshit shitpost or wrecking will overtake it? I'm sad.

The community manager for among us is Victoria Tran, she used to work at Kitfox games and has always been cool and good

  • I fucking loathe Wicca. So I'm looking through Pinterest for ancient history pagan stuff for a thing at work, and anytime you type in "ritual" something Wiccan pops up.

TLDR; around the 40's some british creep wanted to molest young women and so took a ton of pagan, celtic and world ritual knowledge, mashed it together into something resembling a spicy version of christianity and called it a day. It butchers so many world myths and includes so much garbage like a super present man-stronk/woman-feeling dichotomy, what-you-do-will-come-back-to-you-three-times guilt based crap, a rigid hierachy with obviously him at the top, etc.

A shitton of stuff we interpret as pagan or witchcraft-adjacent (even the word coven!) has leaked culturally from Wicca, which is either pulled out of thin air or sourced from super historically disputable material. Nowadays, Wicca permeates any pagan or witchcraft ressource to an extent that it's impossible to find ressources or info that isn't under some weird anglo molester lens. big RIP

Coincidentally, there are much spookier Beksiński paintings than this one so get ready for 2021

  • This is all in CAD so adjust to your local currency (or use my USD estimates), but:

    • entry level 3D generalist is around 30k yearly (give or take 22k USD)
    • "glamour" entry level (so for stuff like character art or rarer stuff like technical artists) is 41k yearly (give or take 30k usd)
    • As you become intermediate/senior you can make your way to like 70k to 80k (50-60USD) if you're still in in-the-trenches positions
    • 80-110k (60-90k USD) is mostly for art directiors and other bigwigs.

For what it's worth, I am technical artist (which are increasingly in demand as game engines complexify) and I started at 20 hourly, then 25 hourly, I am now 70k salaried (so 38 hourly). It sucks that most of the hiring is often done in a "quick, we gotta hire someone" sort of way so pasty white boys with the privilege to nerd around for years often get hired much faster. At least a bunch of initiatives like the Pixelles Game Incubator and Game Devs of Color Expo are helping a bunch.

  • honestly the shit you hear from tenured teachers (usually industry seniors) or lecturers still working day jobs in studios is absolutely wild.

I personally see gamedev work as mostly artisanship - a technical trade with a lot of art and design elements. unfortunately, many peddle the myth that anyone who works in games is a renaissance era oil painter and reinforce the already inflated egos of many unfortunately gullible students; I guess it's easier to see yourself as a creative genius with the financial force of Ubisoft as your muse instead of an exploited worker grinding out 3D wrinkled men for a living.

honestly it always blows my mind when writers or storytellers in general are terrified of using allegory or tropes in general - like, whether you like it or not you will have those in the story so you probably ought to be more self-reflective about what you're writing instead of just vomiting out your racist id

Renegade Cut is definitely still good - along with some more people like Jack Saint or Down the Rabbit Hole.

I think it's funny that at some point Big Joel tweeted that he disliked the breadtube label and that he felt its demise was imminent - it's quite true that it kind of imploded once it reached critical mass and you could start to tell who were part of that "cultural zeitgeist" and who weren't.

Super fair point, I think I shitposted instead of explaining myself correctly - I guess on my end I kind of just feel that some of the now bigger creators are more concerned about flash/presentation than content. And yeah, of course Natalie was always really into presentation and Olly is really enjoying finally being able to produce the sort of content he wanted to with his theatre background and more the power to them but I feel that the actual arguments/discussions have fallen to the wayside a bit. Question of taste I guess!
