  • I mean, this has always been true about the monster taming genre. This game just kinda leans into it like it’s a joke instead of pretending it isn’t happening. Not saying I’m a fan of that angle. In fact, the original trailer had CG video of pals working in sweat shops and they all looked sad and tired, and it was a huge turnoff for me from the game. But let’s not pretend that the premise of every monster taming game ever isnt that you force them into servitude and almost always into violence.

That said, after seeing actual gameplay, all you do is send your pals out on your ranch and they perform chores. It’s not especially dark or gruesome about it. Sometimes the chore is helping you make food or medicine, and sometimes it’s mining or logging, and yes, sometimes it’s making weapons or ammo. I’m not a fan of the memes about slavery or the people who think it’s funny, but the game marketing doesn’t strike me as all that problematic. I would argue it’s worse that you run around punching and shooting these creatures and making them fight to the death, but again, that’s the whole genre. Did you know there are games where all you do is shoot people? People love that shit

Huge fan here. Been to maybe 12 of their concerts including the”Neverender” shows where they play an entire album

SSTB, IKsSE:3, and GAv1 are considered the band’s “holy trinity” by most fans, but there is plenty to love on every album. As you go to the later albums, the lyrics get less edgy and the sound gets less lofi, but the magic is still there. Year of the Black Rainbow is probably the least-liked album, but even that has some bangers like Shattered Symphony and Here We Are Juggernaut. The problem with YotBR is the mix isn’t great. I think people would like it a lot more otherwise. Their newest two albums are the start of a “new” story that I think will be 4 albums. Window of the Waking Mind is a fantastic album but a bit of a deviation from the norm. There’s a lot more electronic and pop rock sound to it, and the title track is like some kind of musical number.

I could rant for hours about what I love and like about the band. They’ve been my most played artist on Spotify every year that they’ve done the “Wrapped” thing and they have maybe less than half a dozen songs that I don’t like.

If you’re looking for more, there’s a ton to get into relating to the Amory Wars including comics and games. I love the fact that there’s a big story, but I will also say that if you peer too closely, you’ll notice that it doesn’t all make a lot of sense, but that’s ok. They also have some side projects out there or bands that they work closely with that you might like as well if you want to get more into the artists. Prize Fighter Inferno, Weerd Science, and Davenport Cabinet are all side projects of some of the main members (there’s also Fire Deuce, but that’s… something else). You could also check out LS Dunes and 3 which have some involvement from the members. And I can’t mention related bands without plugging Thank You Scientist

If you just want stuff that sounds similar to Coheed but isnt too heavy, check out Circa Survive or Mandroid Echostar

TCP is when you don’t get your package because you weren’t there to sign for it and now you have to wait until tomorrow for them to try again. You were home all day and no one rang the bell but you still keep finding a “sorry we missed you” slip in the door. Eventually you have to go to the package center and get it yourself.

UDP is when you get 50 packages per day thrown on your doorstep. Some of them are probably yours and some of those are probably what you ordered, but they show up fast and often

  • Totally understandable. When I first started playing, the GM made us all premade characters to learn the rules on. Then he made templates for us when we played for real so we just had to pick a “class” and spend a few character points for customization.

GURPS is great for any setting and really shines in settings that involve many tech levels, like time traveling (that’s the default setting, in fact). It can be quite simple and elegant, but there are rules for just about any situation you can think of, and the calculations aren’t always simple because of it. Luckily, all rule blocks are optional. Playing GURPS “Lite” is supported/recommended in the base rulebook and it’s a fully functional system on its own.

Anyway, I just love GURPS. After playing for a while, I started loving the character creation but I agree, it can be quite the barrier to entry. Also, running games and planning sessions is a lot of work for the GM. More than most systems I’ve played. If you’re playing rules-light or don’t mind handwaving a few specifics when building enemies, it’s not as bad. But if you’re going all in and trying to make reusable stat blocks, the joys of character creation will come back to bite you lol

  • I have so many that I’ve come across over the years but never had a chance to try. Many of them have been mentioned by others so I’ll just throw in a fresh one: Mouseguard.

The setting just feels so cozy but also heroic. Something akin to a video game like Tunic. The rules are actually quite dense though, so I’ve never gotten buy-in from any players. But it’s one of those golden egg games that I’d really love to play some day

  • Making characters in GURPS is so fun. A friend was running a cyberpunk game one time and I brought like 3 characters so I could pick the one that fit the party the best. Sometimes we would just roll up character concepts to see how many points it would take.

I played a lot of GURPS too, but it’s probably my all time favorite character creation system

  • I had the same experience. It was fine for a while with just error pop ups, but at some point it started crashing like a lot. The devs are taking a break, I hear, so it’s unlikely to get fixed any time soon. I switched to Voyager, but there are other apps too. Not sure if there’s a good workaround in Memmy itself

  • This post already has a lot of comments, but as a relatively new Lemmy user, I also want to add that I agree against defederation except as a last resort. However, that said, I do find most of these hexbear posts and users very annoying.

I consider myself extremely left-leaning, but I’m also not someone who enjoys engaging in political discussion online. One day recently, my Lemmy feed was suddenly inundated with these “chapo” posts (I don’t even know what a chapo is) and the attitude of the posts and comments is very disheartening. They are obviously aggressive and angry, and while I don’t like homophobes, transphobes, xenophobes, and so on, I also don’t want every other post on my feed to be a hate post. Even hating the bad guys gets old really fast. I get it. I was a hater when I was younger too, but I can’t take two steps online today without stumbling into rage or hatred.

A couple weeks ago when I joined Lemmy, it was still feeling cozy enough and positive enough for the most part that it felt like a little safe haven. I started telling all my friends how great it was (as long as you don’t mind porn or are willing to filter out NSFW) and I was excited to post and comment to contribute to the content. But all of a sudden one day these hexbear posts and users started popping up and now I’m embarrassed that I even recommended this place.

I generally agree with their messages when they are standing up for the rights of others and talking about tearing down corrupted establishments, but the sarcasm is so dense and dripping with hatred that it’s almost impossible to tell what they’re talking about or advocating for, so I absolutely do not want to get involved with their discussions.

Anyway, all I’m saying is even though the content is not what I want to see and not what I think is healthy for this sort of site, defederating is serious and breaks one of the best parts of what Lemmy has to offer. We should let the instance moderate itself for a while, even if it means putting up with some noise while things calm down. Letting users filter entire instances will be a fantastic feature when/if it arrives, but for now I’m fine just ignoring the posts or blocking the communities if they are really bothering me
