All American privacy advocates should get a Chinese phone, even if they personally don't support China or think that the Chinese government won't spy on them.

The reason is simple: if the Chinese government goes into your phone's backdoor and accesses your data, what do you think they're going to do with it? The American government could do a whole lot of bullshit to you if they wanted to, but the Chinese government probably isn't going to do jack unless you have access to some kind of military or industrial secrets.

In any event, the real killer is the services your phone is connected to. Apple has a history of respecting people's encrypted phones, and it's easy enough to encrypt an Android if you have one of those, but literally nobody is going to say no to a police request for your cloud data.

I like to read OPM as a kind of Japanese-cynical take on the Justice League. While the JL has people with super powers coming together for the common cause of making the world better, and the Avengers has people with super powers coming together for the common cause of being cops, the Hero's Association in OPM has people with super powers - and a whole lot of pretenders chasing clout - coming together to be salarymen in a massive, inscrutable corporation. The hero's association doesn't empower its members or even promote cooperation among them, instead it pushes them to fight amongst each other chasing personal accolades and slowly crushes whatever enthusiasm they may have originally brought with them into the organization. You may have enjoyed fighting monsters at one point in your life, but if you become an official Hero you will be made to hate it.

They do the thing where they acknowledge mistakes of past socialism, but don't completely blow those mistakes out of proportion and uphold the historical socialist project as a whole. It's refreshing to read when you're mostly exposed to western opinions where the majority of people feel compelled to disavow every socialist project and believe all of the most outrageous propaganda points, and in response to that the largest group of people upholding historical/existing socialism are the ones that deny that any mistakes occurred at all.
