I'd agree if there was conscription or a draft, but there isn't. Everyone talks about how troops were useful in previous revolutions while ignoring the fact that these were conscripts, not volunteers
1974 Revolution in Portugal was mostly done by volunteer soldiers and officers, so this option is possible (if unlikely in USA). But you would still need soldiers and officers to train your leftist militias or you would get steamrolled.

It's really dangerous to underestimate your enemy. The Left in USA is not going to take power without a civil war, and it is really important to prepare for it - building organizations, training in tactics and weapon use, and if you could find soldiers who could teach you how to use artillery and tanks, than it would be even better.
