I think it was started with that kinda early internet libertarian pirate type vibes, it's a "festival" where you basically go out into the same spot in the Arizona desert every year, build a city for a week with absolutely no rules except like no murder, and then at the end you burn it all and clean it up like no one was ever there. Maybe a cool concept, but, it kinda just got filled with rich people who could actually afford it.

Burning Man is an annual event out in a desert. It originated as a bunch of vanlife and free love types going out into an abandoned inhospitable environment to celebrate freedom and self-sufficiency for a week or so, followed by cleaning it all up and leaving with all their trash. As you get with this sort of event and hippies, there was a lot of nudity, free love, and drugs.

Over the years it's stopped being a countercultural event and become more and more of a place influencers and the wealthy go to assume the facade of being interesting and spiritual while co-opting the aesthetics of counterculture. Same as how Nazis keep trying to get their grubby fingers into punk music.

Modern Burning Man has become a festival of the wealthy and the influential doing drugs, pretending to be deep, farming views, having sex with strangers, and seeing topless women riding funny looking bicycles. More than 70,000 people attended this year's event.
