CDMXicans, please chime in

But yeah it's wild the way the city is on a whole lakebed that was drained cause the flooding was too inconvenient to the Spanish colonials, and the last bit of it that was still remaining was about to become a whole ass airport. I guess AMLO won just in time to cancel it (partially complete) and turn it into an Ecological Park. A huge W for a place that needs a sustainable source of water. It's pretty damn convenient that they already are in a lakebed if they can manage it correctly.

Anyway wealthy business interests apparently were big mad about it.

    Part 2

And yeah after AMLO but the kibosh on the Texcoco airport, he still recognized that the need was there and had the AIFA built on an old air base north of the city. It's kinda wild to see it on Bing Maps since it's already a huge development, but it's obviously built with massive expansion in mind.

At the same time, till they hook it up to HSR, it's a bit of a pain to get to. That's not a complete blocker, but puts a good amount of friction on airlines making the transition. One might expect that once a few slide over, more will follow, especially since it's just a better constructed building by modern standards (I have only been to the current airport, which wouldn't be hard to beat). The government is taking some active measures to make this happen in a reasonable amount of time, and it gives liberals a bit of a tizz haha
