how does one even come to the conclusion that the planet-destroying opressive Empire is the good faction in Star Wars? like, at what point is there any scene that presents it as anything else than a genocidal regime? I know that conservatives usually aren’t the most media-literate people but I still can’t wrap my head around that

You have to start from the idea that genocide is a good thing.

Spitballing here. As a child I thought the plot of Star Wars sucked and was boring and I was just waiting for lightsaber fights. It was only as an adolescent I started paying attention to the plot at all. In my advanced age as an 800 year old adrenochrome enjoyer I am now just waiting for the lightsabers again.

Maybe they see the planet exploding and go "WOAH! AWESOME SAUCE!!" Or they see it like I did coyote and roadrunner where I'm sad because the Wile E Coyote is gonna be hungry if he can't eat. "Well yeah, they have to reign in the rebels or they can't have peace in their galaxy." If they don't listen to the plot at all, come in with an a priori agenda conditioned from before they made memories, and have an anti-intellectual stance precluding them from critical thought, they can see some wild colors for the blue curtains.
