Sex work is spawned out of desperation and lack of dignified opportunities that are reasonable to pursue.

It's not unrealistic to "Believing you can just get rid of the oldest profession in the world" because we've already had massive progress doing this in places like China.

Women would rather pursue careers in the STEM field and have dignified careers engaging in national development while also being homeowners and having disposable income that builds.

We can get rid of sex work by eliminating the conditions of poverty driven by capitalism, which, like small time crime, demand will fall in proportion to rising living standards.

    Get real here.

You're arguing with terminal-stage "let people enjoy things" consumerist/coomer brain. I agree with what you said wholeheartedly but I highly doubt the consumerist/coomer will reconsider because that means less sex treats. wall-talk

Yup, but I always post with lurkers in mind. Can't forget the invisible audience.

I couldn't care less what the person with a bad take does with the information, so long as I can move the pieces on the chessboard just right.

It also makes for good practice expressing myself.

It's entirely possible some people will prefer sex work even when they have other options. The important part is that right now, most women in the sex trade do not have a choice, or it is a coerced choice. Although prostitution doesn't fit into my personal morals, I think we need to focus on trying to end the abuse in the sex industry more than than anything else.

You cannot purchase consent. This form of "sex work" will be fundamentally abusive until the conditions for its existence are abolished. There's a word for "sex work" done consensually. That word is sex.

I am not comfortable trying to explain to you why it is impossible to purchase enthusiastic consent. The fact that you need to ask the question makes me uncomfortable interacting with you. Do not reply to me.

Which is arguably in itself, too. Often enough, especially in capitalism. I.e. change in sexual attitudes between the reunified Germany and the GDR.

Other than social ramifications and the potential for pregnancy, what distinguishes sex work from any other kind of work?

If all work under capitalism is coerced due to the threat of poverty, then sex work under capitalism is coerced. What do we call sex that is coerced?

if you remove that threat of poverty, but just keep the practice itself legal?

that's called sex, because it's no longer transactional

                Why is that not acceptable?

                it is

Also, after three days of arguing about this, it now occurs to me that the context of this thread is that of a spike in human trafficking as a result of the war in Ukraine; and that this is probably a bad line of arguments to be making in that context.
