The First International Syndicalist Congress was a meeting of European and Latin American syndicalist organizations at Holborn Town Hall in London that began on this day in 1913. The congress was attended by 38 delegates representing 65 organizations from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, with a total membership between 220,000 and 250,000.

Despite being marked by heated disagreements over both tactics and principles, the Congress succeeded in creating the International Syndicalist Information Bureau as a vehicle of exchange and solidarity between the various organizations, and the "Bulletin international du mouvement syndicaliste" as a means of communication. It would be viewed as a success by almost all who participated.

Welp, today I made what was by far the worst mistake I’ve ever made in any job.

    CW: Animal suffering

I missed a 0 when diluting insulin and accidentally gave a a bunch of rats 10 times as much insulin as they were supposed to receive. 3 died, 1 has recovered but had seizures before he passed out and has had a another since waking up, and 1 is still unconscious. I’ve spent the last 4 hours syringing sugar water into their mouths trying to keep them alive. I did mouth to mouth CPR on a rat.

    .

Also, while this is fully my fault and I shouldn’t have fucked that math up, why the fuck is insulin measured differently from every other substance on earth? What the hell is a “unit of insulin”?? The hell do you mean this vial is 100 units per mL? Why is my final concentration in units per kilogram??? Just use grams you fucking weirdos! If insulin just had normal measurements this error wouldn’t have happened, and I guarantee I’m not the first person to cause problems because of that.

Like, at the end of the day I should’ve done better math. But if I’m engineering disaster style trying to figure out what parts of the system led to the problem and what to change to prevent it happening again, one of my suggestions would be to measure insulin the same way as every other substance.
