American Cold War policies towards the ME was pushing for Islamist theocracies as a bulwark against evil Bolshevik atheism. So nominally, the US had to be friendly towards Arabs, though Israel was constantly throwing a wrench in those plans.
Perhaps these nominally friendly relationships resulted in American Muslims being pro republican? I know that Carter, a democrat, started the Middle East policies, but I don’t remember if it was known publicly during his time.
It’s also possible that it’s more general. Conservatives took a hard line stance against anything left of their hand, which means they were constantly portraying democrats as godless hippies who wanted to destroy the family and god.
