    The only way this makes sense to me is if he was paying for custom videos or something, but that just makes me wonder about the content

      Yeah, I have to assume they wouldn't report on it with such casual phrasing if it was, like, CSAM or something, but I'm pretty sure actual producers pay less for videos.

      I think there's no real explanation except that it was one of those websites that facilitates contact so the sex worker (or someone who presents as being them) is able to milk you for money over time, in which case it makes sense.
