On this day in 1894, the anti-colonial Donghak Peasant Rebellion began with the "Gobu Uprising", where 1,000 peasants stormed the county of Gobu, freeing prisoners, occupying government buildings, and causing the county ruler to flee.

The Donghak Peasant Rebellion was an uprising that took place in late Joseon-era Korea during the 1890s. "Donghak" refers to a religious movement, founded in 1860, which preached for social equality and the uplifting of the peasantry. Choe Jeu was executed by the state in 1864.

Amidst a backdrop of growing foreign influence in Korea (which would eventually lead to colonization by Japan), Donghak peasants rebelled against oppression by feudal rulers. The uprising began in the county of Gobu in Jeolla province, where the magistrate had extorted vast amounts of wealth and forced the peasants to build a reservoir.

On January 10th, 1894, approximately 1,000 peasant rebels gathered at an empty horse ranch, from which they split off into two separate armies where they successfully destroyed three of Gobu's four gates, occupied government offices, and set about destroying prisons and freeing the people held in them.

As rebels successfully defeated government forces, unrest would spread across the country, and the panicked Joseon dynasty called for Chinese Qing dynasty for support. Doing this, however, aggrieved the Japanese government, which was competing with China for influence over Korea.

Japan invaded Korea, occupying Seoul, triggering the First Sino-Japanese War. Following a temporary truce, the peasant rebellion would resume in October, this time directed towards the Japanese occupation.

The Japanese proved successful in defeating the uprising, however, continuing to quell rebels through 1895. Korea would become increasingly absorbed into Japan's sphere of influence before official annexation in 1910.

Never really how much the rest of Lemmy hates this instance until I went into NATO Leftist central and they're accusing this place of being transphobic by proxy and a combination of 4chan and Twitter.

I'm sorry, but maybe there is some merit to younger people being soft if they think this place is anywhere near the level of toxic that 4chan had in the 2000's.

It's mostly just that we're ideologically opposed to them and really really mean about it and having lived in THE END OF HISTORY without any serious ideological opposition to neoliberalism they don't have any framework for people disagreeing with their core beliefs except trolling.

Even the "left-wing" of the 2016-2020 period was literally just "Hmm, what if we combined both capitalism and socialism in a big pot to get the best of both!" It was that level of just having absolutely no fucking clue about anything in politics, political theory, economics, etc, you just wanted free healthcare and reasonable rent/housing prices.

It must be very strange having a reasonably large section of Lemmy (by posting power if nothing else) that explicitly rejects the entire capitalist neoliberal paradigm and way of thinking which is the only thing that they've been exposed to in their entire lives, aside from the spooky bedtime stories that the government has told them about the USSR or China hiding in their closet, ready to pounce out and eat them. If you're exposed to an entirely different system of thinking and are unable to even really comprehend it because you refuse to read, then what else are you meant to do other than accusing them of trolling, or of simply being Evil People?

The best you can do is use the talismans that the government and media have bestowed upon you, the good old "But human nature..." charm, the "Works on paper, doesn't in practice" amulet, and the "100 trillion dead in gulags" enchanted ring. You don't even really know why you're saying this stuff, it's just an automatic response programmed into you, and receiving an effortpost in response which debunks those things just leads you to spew out more talismanic responses. You're a defender of an ideology that you aren't even aware that you have, so when somebody comes at you with a different ideology, all you can do is just say shit like "Oh, yeah, those people over there are horrific genocide apologists. Yeah, they aren't even really trans, it's just a whole site that's trolling the rest of lemmy. They're so idiotic that they can't even see that competition and markets and democracy (as we conceive it) obviously get the best results - don't they know that the USSR's fall totally demolishes the argument of central planning? Just don't even engage with them."

all the while, we're over here debating the finer points of Chinese economic policy in the Deng era and how it compares to the USSR under Lenin and Stalin; the foundations of neoclassical economics and the people who invented the idea of austerity; various obscure countries and conflicts around the world; and, well, having struggle sessions about sillier things too.

Yeah, I likely have some unprocessed trauma and low-key issues from the shit I used to see on 4chan when I was way too young. To think this site is anything even remotely close is laughable
