Was it really intentional though? Why would Israel bomb the people who give them weapons and funding?

got this from a comment on reddit

It wasn't accidentally bombed. the survivors very much agree on that and the testimonies. Other than that the huge american flag was there, and it was bombed repeatedly and not only once.

The motives aren't agreed on, some say it's because they got intel to the https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ras_Sedr_massacre or a massacre in gaza. At least that's what james bamford think, Or they made it to be a false flag operation were Egypt attacked so usa joins the war.

James Bamford, an author that has extensively chronicled the history and operations of the National Security Agency, posits that the massacre may have served as a casus belli for the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty. Bamford theorizes that the Israeli Defense Forces were concerned that the USS Liberty, a signals intelligence collection ship, may have collected evidence of the massacre and was thus attacked in an effort to suppress the evidence.[9][10][11][12][13][14]

Interesting. But did it not occur to them that the US doesn't particularly care about atrocities committed by their allies?

Supposedly the US and Israel wasn't the same type of BFF's back in 1967 that they are now. It was only after the Arab-Israeli war in 1967 that the Americans began trying to turn Israel into a millitary base. Prior to 1967, Israel was more of a european project than an American one, which I assume has to do with the fact that America got scared when Nasser took over the Suez-canal.

Maybe they were worried that some of the intel could be used against them or possible leaks, I mean is not like the US is a reliable ally.

34 killed, 171 wounded. Most of them died because of torpedo hit. Imagine this: "accidental" attack that involved multiple planes "accidentally" attacking, including "accidentally" strafing lifeboats and then torpedo boats "accidentally" arrived at the scene and "accidentally" launched torpedoes.

It was obviously intentional. The ship was intercepting Israeli signals. Read the order of events, the planes continued strafing long after any plausibility was extinguished.
