Bloody Sunday, also known as the Bogside Massacre, was a massacre of Irish anti-internment protesters by the British government that took place on this day in 1972 in the Bogside area of Derry, Northern Ireland.

Bloody Sunday resulted in the highest number of people killed in a shooting incident during the Troubles and remains the worst mass shooting in Northern Irish history. This violence was in response to a protest organized by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) in opposition to a state policy of internment without trial, introduced in August of 1971.

On January 18th, 1972, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland Brian Faulkner banned all parades and marches in response to widespread civil unrest. The protest march was organized despite this order.

On the day of the protest, approximately 10,000-15,000 joined the march, however their path was blocked by British Army barriers. The protest descended into chaos, with British soldiers chasing down protesters and attacking them indiscriminately. 26 people were shot, 14 were killed. Many of the victims were shot while fleeing from the soldiers or attending to the wounded, while others were injured by shrapnel, rubber bullets, batons, or being ran down by army vehicles.

The soldiers were from the 1st Battalion Parachute Army, which had perpetrated the Ballymurphy Massacre just months prior. The events of Bloody Sunday greatly increased hostilities between Northern Ireland and the British government. Support for and recruitment by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) rose following the massacre.

Non-vegans really be doing a lot of mental gymnastics to convince themselves their consumption habits are ecologically and ethically cool unlike those pesky vegetarians and vegans.

Like, sure keep eating meat whatever, just say you like the taste instead of coming up with silly arguments. They make it sound like a meat inclusive diet is more difficult to do than a vegan diet when it's the default option nearly everywhere. You arent doing shit, you don't need to write an article about how cool you are for not being vegan or vegetarian. It's the shit non-vegans accuse vegans of doing.

I don't mean to start a long argument on this, so I'll just say my piece and then quietly go away. I'm not vegan because I'm basically at the end of my psychological rope in real life. I simply don't have the mental energy to care about the issue one way or the other. I'm not proud of that fact. But it is a fact. There's so much other crap going on in my life that drains my energy, that I just can't be bothered to take a detailed look into the entire production chain of every single thing that goes into or onto my body. I can barely maintain the energy to hold down a job.

Yeah, that always weirds me out. I work with a few people like that. They are in dreadful health.

I have made some dietary changes in a better direction. Cutting out all meat that comes from mammals, switching to oat milk (which I genuinely prefer the taste of over dairy milk), having a lot more steamed veggies, opting for vegetarian or vegan meals when eating out, etc. But I can't pretend that I'm dong it for principled reasons. It's basically 50/50 financial/health reasons.

There is very little meat that tastes good by itself, people confuse salt and seasoning for meat taste. Yes you like chicken nuggets but its the deep fried batter you like, the inside is just a texture youre used to. Try eating chicken nugs w no batter and no sauce

even many "plain" meats from the store are actually processed a lot. The chicken is probably full of saline, the ham is probably brined and cooked and glazed, the beef may have extra fat or seasonings added, any pre-shaped patties are probably full of fillers and binders, many meat products are cured.

But people think "meat just tastes good all on its own"

you eat vegan cheese made with ingredients harvested by slaves in the third-world then you're objectively morally superior.

Who do you think harvests oysters? Who do you think slaughters animals? It's all exploitation under capitalism. Even if you eat just bread or whatever there also, migrant labor (at least in western countries).

I think veganism as a diet takes quite a bit more effort than the default option. Dairy is everywhere, animal products are everywhere. You aren't cool for being the default option, thats what i meant.

Exactly, it's all lesser evilism. I literally addressed that point in my comment, you just didn't read that far.

Vegans don't portray themselves as "we have the least amount of suffering but its all a compromise." Instead, they say "eating an oyster makes you a bad person so just eat this vegan cheese." Veganism is infinitely closer in suffering caused to the default than they are to their imagined post-suffering diet.
