Bloody Sunday, also known as the Bogside Massacre, was a massacre of Irish anti-internment protesters by the British government that took place on this day in 1972 in the Bogside area of Derry, Northern Ireland.

Bloody Sunday resulted in the highest number of people killed in a shooting incident during the Troubles and remains the worst mass shooting in Northern Irish history. This violence was in response to a protest organized by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) in opposition to a state policy of internment without trial, introduced in August of 1971.

On January 18th, 1972, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland Brian Faulkner banned all parades and marches in response to widespread civil unrest. The protest march was organized despite this order.

On the day of the protest, approximately 10,000-15,000 joined the march, however their path was blocked by British Army barriers. The protest descended into chaos, with British soldiers chasing down protesters and attacking them indiscriminately. 26 people were shot, 14 were killed. Many of the victims were shot while fleeing from the soldiers or attending to the wounded, while others were injured by shrapnel, rubber bullets, batons, or being ran down by army vehicles.

The soldiers were from the 1st Battalion Parachute Army, which had perpetrated the Ballymurphy Massacre just months prior. The events of Bloody Sunday greatly increased hostilities between Northern Ireland and the British government. Support for and recruitment by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) rose following the massacre.

The ratio of people killed by the Brits and their assassins so greatly outweighs the number of people killed by all the republican groups combined that it should immediately make anyone question the propaganda line that the IRA's war against the British was mindless religiously motivated violence.

What always breaks my heart with Bloody Sunday is how many of the dead were 17. Six out of 14 hadn't even become adults yet. They marches for their people and for the hope they could have a future and the British fucking massacred them

They also killed mostly civilians, not even IRA members. Especially the unionist groups they were basically only killing civilians.

Star Citizen kind of ruins the magic of space by being market brained. I got stranded on a desolate moon, I forgot where I landed and searched for a few desperate minutes before I finally found it... blown up. I thought I was going to die alone, my body never recovered. And worse, I'd lose my helmet with the cat ears. But then I remembered this is a multi-player game! Now I'm pretty socially anxious and part of me probably would rather die in a frozen moon than ask for help but my kitty helmet was at stake so I open the general comms and ask for help. Turns out, you don't just ask for help in this game, you have to go to the jobs tab and create a rescue job, which you'll need to pay for. And I didn't have enough money left so instead of having a cool interaction with a stranger I remembered why I don't like talking to people, because everything feels like a damn transaction when it comes to being social.

    More twitter discourse liveblogging.

Seems like some people have a real issue knowing the difference between a-social and anti-social? Someone posted a take about how its bad that we've basically accepted people playing music, watching tiktoks or having loud phone games on without headphones in enclosed spaces like public transportation, and called it antisocial.

And there were a surprising amount of people quote tweeting that with "Actually its more antisocial to wear headphones, if you listen to music without them you're really actually sharing that experience with the people around you." And aside from that being IMO a goofy ass take from someone who doesnt ride the bus, thats just literally not true by the definitions of the words, its more asocial to wear headphones and block out your surroundings, but its definitely not antisocial, as in disrupting society around you.

Of course, theres discourse to be had if antisocial as a concept and word is fundamentally cop-speak, but that didnt really enter the discourse at all, nor did people take notice that further down the original thread the OP suggested that not wearing headphones while doing loud things on your phone should be put in the DSM definition for Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is a whole different kind of cop brain going on, but nope, all the quote tweets I saw were just complaining about people wearing headphones or how its actually cool and good to blast phone apps on the bus.

Going around and asking people if they don't mind listening to sick beats: social

Sitting and listening to sick beats without sharing your opinions with other people: asocial

Sitting and listening to sick beats knowing people hate you: antisocial

thanks for these updates, a fun reminder why I never ever ever go on twitter

But also like whaaaat how. I try not to be a noise nazi cause I feel like that's a white people thing (in a bad way), and being a narc about it and reporting them to the driver or a cop or something is definitely super antisocial, but just blasting shit loud with no regard is also antisocial. Most people I run into on the bus without headphones just play stuff loud enough for themselves to hear it clearly, and while it can still be annoying to hear in the background, I just deal cause like whatever I don't know their life, and it's not that annoying. I guess if it was really loud I'd just ask someone to turn it down, but its never been a big issue for me.

If common courtesy is antisocial, then I’m antisocial as shit. Granted I am antisocial as shit and will freely tell anyone who asks as much

I've been watching a lot of Monk lately (detective series from the 00s) and was just thinking recently about how weird it is that the show is set in San Francisco but nearly everyone in the show is white—not just the main cast, but basically all the guest stars and even most of the extras. The city is over 30% Asian but in the space of like 40 episodes there have been four episodes with Asian characters in the following roles: dry cleaner, triads, martial artists, and triads again. It's ridiculous.

Anyway, cops being what they are, I had a dream last night that I put a Palestinian flag in my window and the cops from Monk came to interrogate me about it lmao

New acquaintance is a Vaush watching radlib manhattan she sent me a screenshot of a mid meme but had a vaush video playing at the bottom

She seemed cool and trans and turned out to be in a poly thing with a friend of a friend, and I even didn't say anything directly against her radlibbing it up about stalin, but now I don't even want to reply... Somehow funny-clown-hammer is a bigger red flag than being anti-AES or making a little bit over-the-top jokes about bottoms

I should probably figure out how to get over it because we run in the same circles, and we met doing mutual aid work, but gd it I don't want to pretend that predator is okay or that I'm a squishy radlib

Posting neat Chinese phrases whenever I feel like #6

    前车之鉴

    (qián chē zhī jiàn)

    Literally: “front car[t] [’s] mirror”

Figuratively: “lesson to be learned from sb else’s mistakes”

鉴 is pretty spicy, its etymology goes something like mirror -> reflect -> scrutinize -> warning, the last of which is relevant here. The implication is that the car in front has crashed.

I'm 42. I teach in a College and work in research in University. I have a master's degree from U of Montreal and a Doctorate from Concordia. I've read more books then you will in your entire life. My mom is from a first nation community and my dad is a french canadian. I think this sub is fucking pathetic. I'm not sure what exactly Chappo is, but it's seems you people need them to tell you what to think. You guys are behaving EXACTLY like Trump supporters: privilege white people behaving like they are better then everyone. Toxic AF. Wannna tell me about you? Did you ever accomplished anything interesting or do you just tell people on the internet they suck to make you feel good?
