You press them on issues of imperialism, make them realize their privileged position depends on the subjugation and exploitation of the global south, they can only mitigate the cognitive dissonance by either moving left or by owning up to their neo-colonialist mindset, and it turns out a lot of lanyard dorks are perfectly willing to accept the step from implicit to explicit racism.

I've noticed White Man's Burden has pretty explicitly evolved into the Western Liberal's Burden. Other cultures are inferior because they don't accept liberal democratic values / are socially regressive, so therefore mass violence against them is acceptable to correct that behavior (don't ask where many of them got stuff like homophobia though).
