Yeah, because the Algerians just famously sat around and waited for the French to leave, and even if they fought, not like they were in any actual danger.
Yeah the French totally left all on their own, and this love of the freedom fighters is comparable to American conservatives.
That thread is a gold crap mine of dunk tank posts.
The lyrics to the Algerian national anthem were first written on a fucking jail wall with the author's own blood, you literally could not get more freedom-yearning revolutionary self-sacrificing heroic martyrdom if you were writing fanfiction of a goddamn YA novel in the early 2010s
Is it just me or have libs gotten insanely more racist over the last year? It feels like they at least used to pretend to care, but now they're jumping at the bit to bust the calipers out to demonstrate the superiority of
the white racewestern thoughtThere's definitely a doubling down effect with some of them. You press them on issues of imperialism, make them realize their privileged position depends on the subjugation and exploitation of the global south, they can only mitigate the cognitive dissonance by either moving left or by owning up to their neo-colonialist mindset, and it turns out a lot of lanyard dorks are perfectly willing to accept the step from implicit to explicit racism.
I've noticed White Man's Burden has pretty explicitly evolved into the Western Liberal's Burden. Other cultures are inferior because they don't accept liberal democratic values / are socially regressive, so therefore mass violence against them is acceptable to correct that behavior (don't ask where many of them got stuff like homophobia though).
Republicans (pretending) to be the "anti-Hawk" party really did make normie Libs 1000% worse on foreign policy.
I know the actual DNC has always been as imperialistic as the RNC, but the Libs I knew in High School were generally at least somewhat anti-war. Now suddenly the Iraq War was based actually.
The edges of the ideology are peeling off as collapse accelerates, so what we see are the true believers who have to believe because their jobs depend on it.

Unironically what a lot of French people think from me arguing with them, "we just left and gave you independence" like imagine taking an L so hard you made yourself believe you actually gave away a valuable piece of land just because they were kind, in reality they fear another Algeria, people who were colonized for a 132 years but still haven't given up their identity, people who lost 1.5 million people and haven't given up their fight for freedom.
A million or so pieds noirs remigrating in France really did a number to the french consciousness (which wasn't in a great shape prior to the war)
Shit, my grandfather on my mother's side died in an ambush in Algeria, my grandfather on my father's side was a truck driver and used to see soldier's coffins when he was loading merchandise in Marseille
Algerian independence was hard fought and hard won
And by God the Palestinians will bring that upon their colonizers too.
Does anyone else get the vibe that Reddit is just a bunch of gen x and older millennials? Like I keep seeing the most caustically stupid takes and satanic racism on that site, which doesn't necessarily mean that younger people can't be among those groups, but still.
Like the combination of deeply unserious and uncalibrated takes, abused and overused memes, and racism/-phobias just scream 35-50s.
Compared to TikTok, the environment and posts are just SO MUCH different.
It was originally all wealthy tech-bros and that has absolutely shaped the userbase to this day.
their desire is less for the rescue of the people of Palestine and more for the feeling of being radical and always in the right
Redditors once again admitting they do not understand the concept of empathy.
The only thread of truth in the screenshot is that it's easy to romanticize resistance movements and to give specific ones a greater historical role than is accurate.
Not the Algerian resistance movement though, lol. They kicked the French right the fuck out.
god that thread is so dumb. like wow yeah once anticolonial liberation is won the nascent state doesn't automatically become a utopia, I am a seasoned reddit liberal who knows the ways of the world. removing a knife from my back doesn't mean I'll win the fucking olympics! Shocking!
I guess the USA was just going through "growing pains" or some shit for the last 240 years since gaining independence from the British instead of instantly becoming a utopia (even by imperialist lib standards).
"I am a great person, morally, I'm amazing. But these leftists seem to care about moral things more than I do. That can't be right, because I'm such a good person! But what if...what if their motivations for caring were even more false than mine? That would mean I get to be morally superior to them! I'm too clever for my own good!"
The worst part about this, aside from all of it, is that they know they are being a dick, but they think that by being a dick they are superior in thinking.
It is impossible for them to imagine that they are both being a dick AND wrong.
idealist leftists
im going to refrain from doing something very violent by pretending he means that most people in the west who call themselves 'leftists' are actually just liberals :^)
