On this day, 4 years ago the site was first launched (then a day later the first post made), Formed from chapotraphouse remnants, the old admins decided to make a site using Lemmy as its base. Originally called chapo.chat, Hexbear has grown into one of the biggest instances in the lemmyverse.

Despite various sitewide struggle sessions, wrecker incursions from other forums and federation drama, Hexbear has keep growing strong in its 4th year, now with 4 megathreads, over 4 million comments, 300k posts and much more.

Its being great running the general megathread for a bit over 3 years, since i took over i have tried to get it mostly in time and just one unlike during the old times, i like to think i have done a decent job, plus i have also added a bit of reading material to them so you nerds can learn from them and i like to think you have been reading them garcia-cock-shotty, its also nice to see the new megathreads how they have slowing grown up to the size to the old general mega in the time of the old admins.

dont have much else to say so have a good day nerd. also

Whats has been your favorite post/event from last year (july 2023-july 2024)?

the boys s4 spoilers cw sa, capeshit

The Boys is lib because they made the only Black woman supe a secret caucasion test tube manchild enjoyer and not a mega based communist who has read Das Kapital in its original German.

The problem with making characters whose gimmick is "being very smart" is that they would be hardened socialists and not ego tripping nerds. I'm really disappointed with what they did with sister sage. I hate the trope of "smart in retrospect" or "everything I did was part of the plan" for "super intelligent" characters.

I think the boys struggles with actually humanizing supes by introducing more supe allies to the boys. A train redemption is bittersweet, but if you actually want to make Butcher seem selfish then you need more supe friends than Kimiko and Annie/Starlight. If there was an actual supe resistance org by supes and less "kink-shame for laughs" then I would actually care more when Butcher says "oi oi oi I got me a tentacle cancer hentai monster to kill ya all"

Like if we had more Mesmer type characters where Butchers bloodlust is put in a more critical lens then we would build empathy for supes. But right now we get scenes of the deep murdering his octo girlfriend because it's funny lol men kill women. Like which cisgender loser decided we needed more scenes of the deep? Did they run out of actors???

S4 really is where the boys capeshittified because of the lazy capeshit tropes they're pulling. I'm rewatching the older seasons and they were leagues better than this one.

You're 100% right about Sage. Otherwise I feel like they haven't been quite sure what to do with the stakes since somewhere in season 2. Like I assume they have an end in mind and all the characters need to get there, but then Amazon says hey you get 8 episodes a season so everything gets simultaneously rushed and drawn out. I'm willing to bet that once season 5 comes out, you'll have like 10 episodes of material stretched into 2 8-ep seasons. That's how you end up with that Deep/Octopus shit and Hughie having nothing to do after his dad arc gets wrapped up so they just have been get sa'ed every episode for laughs.

Disagree on Sage. There's a lot of different ways to be smart, and political realities don't necessarily turn people into communists upon realizing them. Some of the smartest people I've met go on to work at the MIC or finance, and they know what they're doing; they just see it as the best option for themselves and have no spine. She is genuinely antisocial and belongs to a different class of people than regular humans, her fascist tendencies make sense in that context. Her path to power is through Homelander. I agree that the whole "all according to plan" is really boring and a bad trope, though. They could've done without that part.

        s4

I wish they would have given her a different superpower rather than "being super smarts." A much better way of showing how socially isolated she is could be by giving her the power of never being tired or never needing to/being able to sleep. She becomes exactly the schemer that homelander wants while also not projecting a very narrow interpretation of what human intelligence is. I'm guessing they were making a comment on how even if you had the smartest people in the world that capitalism wouldn't allow a Black woman to improve society, but like, really? It just breaks my suspension of disbelief when she says "lol I solved cancer in 3 days while I was a kid." I get it is a superhero show, but at least the powers were entertaining and easy to understand and the writers could play with them in unique ways.

I feel like the show right now isn't criticizing/making fun of America but just how MAGA people see America. If I wanted that I would watch Last Week with John Oliver and chuckle at all his sex quips and not writers thinking that SA every episode to a twink is funny. I think season 5 is going to be more slop but I hope they ditch the electoral soapbox finger wagging and just regress back into the comics' killmurder extravaganza because those were the parts of the show I wouldn't skip through.
