On this day, 4 years ago the site was first launched (then a day later the first post made), Formed from chapotraphouse remnants, the old admins decided to make a site using Lemmy as its base. Originally called chapo.chat, Hexbear has grown into one of the biggest instances in the lemmyverse.

Despite various sitewide struggle sessions, wrecker incursions from other forums and federation drama, Hexbear has keep growing strong in its 4th year, now with 4 megathreads, over 4 million comments, 300k posts and much more.

Its being great running the general megathread for a bit over 3 years, since i took over i have tried to get it mostly in time and just one unlike during the old times, i like to think i have done a decent job, plus i have also added a bit of reading material to them so you nerds can learn from them and i like to think you have been reading them garcia-cock-shotty, its also nice to see the new megathreads how they have slowing grown up to the size to the old general mega in the time of the old admins.

dont have much else to say so have a good day nerd. also

Whats has been your favorite post/event from last year (july 2023-july 2024)?

I wont lie, all the fedidrama has been fun to read, especially when libs wander here

Megathreads and spaces to hang out:

reminders:

  • 💚 You nerds can join specific comms to see posts about all sorts of topics
  • 💙 Hexbear’s algorithm prioritizes comments over upbears
  • 💜 Sorting by new you nerd

    Element information

Element is a messaging app that lets you talk to people over the Matrix protocol.

To get started, check out this link, where you can choose to either download Element for your platform or, if on a computer, open it in a browser.

The instructions that follow are for the desktop application and the web application, but the process is similar on all apps:

    Press "Create Account"

We host our own Matrix server, so if you want you can change matrix.org to chapo.chat.

This is completely optional; users who sign up with a matrix.org username can still talk to people with chapo.chat username.

(Note: It is chapo.chat, not hexbear.net. Also, registrations aren't always open on chapo.chat; if they're not, just create an account on matrix.org)

Fill in a username and password

    Hit register, and you're done!

On my way down to DC to protest Netenyahu's speech and send a message to all the genocidal monsters in congress

This is a good way to celebrate Hexbear's anniversary, my favorite post/event has to be mkuktrawide coining the phrase Genocide Joe and today I represent the corner of the internet where it happened

Seeing IT guys and programmers joke about how expensive AWS is now, and I guess it's funny how everyone saw this coming but noone had a plan for it.

I have never seen astroturfing as effective as what's happening for Kamala right now. It's actually terrifying, leftist TikTok creators are getting destroyed in the comments of their videos for speaking out, and the libs are naturally eating it up. This to me is eerily reminiscent of the Obama campaign in 2008, back when I was still a lib myself. Kamala is not nearly as charismatic, but I am sure we still see some very forced parallel imagery.

It's very early and time certainly has accelerated in the past few years, but unless something crazy happens between now and November, my instinct is that Trump is going to get steamrolled. They are running her as the younger cool mom candidate vs the nasty old white man, non-jaded zoomers will eat it up and they will set themselves up for their own Obama disillusionment in a few years. Nothing will fundamentally change.

Four years of this place, makes me sad I missed it. Wife brought me here last september or so? and I made my account in November. Pretty cool webzone, hats off to the feds for orchestrating the creation of such a neat site.
