Calixto García Íñiguez, born on this day in 1836, was a general in three separate Cuban uprisings for independence - the Ten Years' War, the Little War, and the War of 1895, which bled into the Spanish-American War.

García joined the Ten Years' War at the age of 18. Five years later, when surrounded by Spanish troops, he shot himself under the chin with a .45 caliber pistol to not give them the satisfaction of capturing him. Although the bullet went out of his forehead and knocked him unconscious, he survived. The wound left a great scar and gave him headaches for the rest of his life.

García played a key role in the ultimately successful War of 1895 and protested the subsequent lack of Cuban autonomy in the conclusion of the war (no Cuban was allowed to sign the terms of surrender and the Spanish leaders in Cuba were allowed to keep their posts in Santiago).

After American military commander William Shafter excluded Cubans from negotiations for the surrender of Santiago, declined to invite García to the surrender ceremonies, and let Spanish authorities remain in control of Santiago until the U.S. could establish a military government, García resigned from the rebel army in protest on July 17th, 1898.

García died of pneumonia on December 11th, 1898 while on a diplomatic mission in Washington, D.C. Today, his portrait is on the 50 Cuban peso banknote.

I binged The Boys recently, and I’ve seen a lot of people on Twitter say that the writing and quality of the show have gone down massively, especially with the latest season. And I gotta say, I think it was pretty much always as bad as it is now.

I don’t dislike the show, it’s fun, but it was never brilliantly written. Maybe the first season is a little better than the ones that follow after, but once they establish the season 2 status quo for each of the boys their stories just repeat the same loops, mostly. Hughie and Butcher still get some development.

Sure, the hamfisted political commentary is bad. But it wasn’t that much more subtle from the very start of the show.

Every season of the boys: Butcher: "Omelandah killed me woif and nicked royin" Homelander:"I'm gonna LOSE IT" MM:"Butcher you are off the boys"

In my opinion the fourth season is by far the worst because it just feels like they were trying to stretch it out. I think season five will be fun since things will actually happen.

if you like it the spin off Gen V is pretty much more of the same, plus ties into the current season's plot

this season really hit me with a cognitohazard with

spoiler talking about dementia and death

the plot line with hughie's dad becoming brain dead, then getting shot up with V. idk, lotta fucked up shit on the show but getting dementia plus super powers so you keep killing people on accident and forgetting it was you while you're just lost and terrified? And depending on the powers, that could go on for literally forever? At least until someone stronger than you can put you down? like jesus christ. And what if you're like, Homelander strong and nothing can kill you?

Anyway I'm already too afraid to think of death, it's already pretty fucked up, but the super power dementia shit was some real extra stuff I didn't want to think about

Oh yeah, I really liked Spoiler’s storyline in season 4.

        spoiler

Hughie I mean. I thought his whole thing with his dad (and also mom) was great. Especially since it looks like he’ll be in a similar position with Butcher in the final season.

I’ll probably check out Gen V eventually, though I’m always suspicious of shows about teenagers. I just always expect them to be as bad as CW originals. Even when I know that’s ridiculous. I still haven’t watched Euphoria yet, and from everything I’ve heard from friends I know I’d love it but I just can’t start it because in the back of my mind it’ll either be the OC or Buffy (sorry to any Buffy fans) or Lean on Me.
