    uncomfortable in their own skin

    always wondering where they are on the social totem pole

    assuaging their anxieties by pantomiming what they have seen cooler people do

    this just sounds like autism, though I'm pretty sure "autistic = loser" isn't the point you're trying to make

      I guess I should add that unlike those with autism they also would pick on kids less popular than them, spread fake rumors to make people pariahs and elevate their own social status comparatively, and call every act of unbridled enthusiasm by anyone "gay" as well.
