I think that their idea of a good faith argument with someone they disagree with is to find common ground and then shake hands with neither party changing their minds at all but now they respect each other or some stupid trash like that. When confronted with a zero sum argument or a need to actually have a groundwork for your argument instead of living in an infinite game of devil's advocate they panic. They get flustered. They remember the time they asserted in 8th grade that Albuquerque was in the country of Mexico and not the state of new Mexico and the entire class and teacher laughed at them (never happened to me. Made up story. ) and that's when they lose their cool
