I'm more of the opinion that deteriorating material conditions are driving people out of liberal mainstream and liberals' obsession with fact checking is their attempt to limit hemorrhaging of supporters.
For sure, the decline in living standards that people are experiencing is ultimately what drives disillusionment with the system. Hence the gaslighting, you see your life getting worse in each and every way while the media keeps telling you how it's the best economy ever.
