Think a lot of it comes down to a very paternalistic classical rationalism. We, like the Greeks, have discovered the scientific method of reason and logic, and we use it incorruptibly to rule with responsibly over the savage non-thinkers.

I think it was born out of centuries of protestant 'work hard and humble' mixed with the liberation from the church into science. Then again, America is still pretty religious.
