What I learned today is that people don't think "The Left" means abolishing capital and private property. They think it's a vague basket of social policies, not economic systems. Like, they don't think its "abolish capitalism and social policies", just the social policies.
You can thank an entire century's worth of propaganda for that one. Every group in the United States that has asked for a better or more equitable society has been accused of being secretly communist / marxist / socialist / russian / chinese (those are all interchangable for Americans). And since neoliberalism has made the discussion of actual economic policy haram, people are left to only discuss the social policies (also due to the whitewashing that the State has successfully managed to pull off with regards to historical radicals).
The other day my conservative stepdad said that the EU was leftwing, when I said he was crazy he would just rant about the greens.
Politics is just vibes, and the vibes aren't even good.

"Left" and "Right" are purely dependent on the local political status quo.
