It's delicious but is like drinking a stick of butter, and the only thing that makes drinking more than a small cup of it seem like a good idea is adding brandy or rum (which usually thins it out a bit anyway)

Egg nog, egg cream, what was it about old timey people and thinking eggs were synonymous with refreshing beverages? The good part in there is the rum, realize massive increases in efficiency by drinking rum directly.

If made correctly, it is alcoholic cake you drink.

    I don't like cake/eggnog, but I'm surprised homemade eggnog isn't more popular.

I love it. Not with alcohol or anything though. Fireball made an eggnog with a hot cinnamon flavor (presumably to use in their alcohol) and it was great. But they haven’t sold it for a couple years.

Can be fantastic if you make it yourself. Usually terrible if you buy it from the store, unless you get a small local brand from local farms.

It's delicious but yeah you definitely have to make it the right way by actually fermenting it. Store bought eggnog isn't actually eggnog it's just flavored sugar milk and it's gross

      actually fermenting it.

You very emphatically do not ferment it. It's a mix of milk, eggs, sugar, and enough distilled alcohol to kill anything growing in it, that's then left in the cold for several months until it mellows out. I keep wanting to make some properly, but never remember to in time so I settle for mixing the store eggnog at about a 3-1 ratio with rum or vodka which thins it out nicely and cuts away the cloying sweetness, following the general idea that if it doesn't burn going down there's not enough alcohol in it.

Oh wait yes. You're correct and I'm dumb. I dunno why I thought you're supposed to ferment it. You do have to let it sit for a while and in my mind the only reason to let stuff sit is for fermentation reasons

PSA: If you put a kinda conservative amount of rum or whiskey in the eggnog and some finely ground spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, it tastes a lot better

It's very sweet and very heavy. I like it but not enough to seek it out outside of the holiday season.

I'm not into the bottles you buy but I basically make it as a cocktail around the holidays each year.

    Recipe:

    • Build in shaker
    • .5 oz Simple Syrup
    • .5 oz Luxardo Maraschino
    • .5 oz Cognac
    • 1.5 oz Bourbon
    • 1 whole egg
    • Dry shake
    • Add ice and shake again
    • Strain into glass
    • Top with milk, I use Oat Milk for whatever reason
    • Sprinkle on some nutmeg and orange zest
