When I told my boomer relatives this, their response was:

Don’t believe everything the Chinese media says.

Meanwhile the various states/national government of India continually downplays the number of deaths. Yesterday my state reported just 40ish deaths. I know for a fact that there were 20 new corpses that arrived at just one of the countless crematoriums/burial places in my city. Just one.

I remember how just a couple of weeks ago people used to go around without masks, no social distancing, nothing and I’d be the only one wearing a mask. And they’d all say:

Corona to khatam ho gaya. (Covid is finished).

People were organising election rallies with hundreds of thousands of people out in the street, there was a massive fucking religious festival with literally millions of people attending.

Indians just assumed we’d somehow escaped Covid. We hadn’t gotten any of the second or third waves other countries were getting and even our first wave did far less damage than people had thought it would.

These past 10-15 days have truly shown all the “the cure is worse than the disease” people what it is we were trying to prevent. Why it isn’t okay to say we’ve already got herd immunity. Or that India has a young population. Or that rural people have better immunity so they don’t get Covid. All things I’ve heard multiple times.

Even now, you can’t compare India to countries that have contained it well. Why? Because countries like Australia are rich, Vietnam has far fewer people, and China is a totalitarian state that just lies.

This pattern of thinking applies to everything in India. We can’t compare ourselves to other developed nations because they’re rich off exploitation. True. But we also can’t compare ourselves to other developing nations because they have far fewer people. That’s a shit excuse, but okay. That only leaves China right? Nope. Because China doesn’t have “freedom”. The people are oppressed. The state controls everything. And India, for all its flaws, is a democracy.

Drives me nuts. China is the only country we can compare ourselves to. They got their freedom in 1949. We got it in 1947. They were an incredibly rich civilisation utterly destroyed by western powers and left to rot. The same happened to us. There is no other country India can compare itself to. But we’re too busy terrorising Pakistan, and our Muslim & Dalit citizens, and cozying up with Amerikkka and other western fascists/capitalists to try to learn from China.

I don’t remember where I read this, but it’s so fucking true. You take a hundred of the poorest people in India and send them to China for a month to live like the poorest there. And send a hundred of the poorest people in China to India for a month and tell them to live like the poorest here. See who wants to return back to their country after the month is up. Who still thinks whether bourgeois ideals that do not have any material basis in reality are what makes India better than China.

Sorry for the rant. Kudos to all Chinese comrades who managed to achieve not just an national independence but social and economic independence too.

I have like 3 friends who say this. I just tell them if the numbers out of China were bad, then you would accept them without question and you'd be talking about how badly they've handled it. The numbers are good so it's them lying. Almost as if you guys just refuse to believe anything good about China because of your prejudice.

Given that Indian hospitals are currently facing a severe shortage of oxygen/cylinders, this comment is very darkly humorous.

Let's assume it was true that China lied about its covid deaths. China is not a closed country, so if the pandemic there was far worse than the authorities claim then there would be independent reports coming out of China about full hospitals, busy crematoria and harsh lockdowns. Travellers from China would bring infection home.

We've heard nothing of all that. Although states are notorious liars nothing indicates that the Chinese are lying about this one.

Yeah exactly, good for you your country elected a democrat and is now hoarding all the vaccines + the patents.

And Modi is just the face. The real power lies with the RSS which has hundreds of millions of members and is funded by Indian + foreign billionaires. Like, even if Modi loses tomorrow the RSS + other Hindutva fascists are here to stay.

Very similar to discourse I've see in US.

    Solidarity comrade.

It is absolutely American influence. We’re seeing the same rhetoric about immigrants/refugees re: Bangladesh and the Rohingya. Modi has made the entire electoral system appear as a presidential race rather than the parliamentary system we actually have. Like he’s literally just copying the western fascist playbook.

They frame their anti-lockdown rhetoric as being pro-worker/labourers. It’s true, what Modi and his government has done for the actual poor people is less than jackshit and actively malevolent. But just because his weak lockdown literally a year ago was terrible for everyone *doesn’t mean lockdowns are not the right solution.

You don’t have to shit everything down and condemn hundreds of millions of people to starve and die and walk hundreds of kilometres on foot to go back to their villages (which is what Modi did).

Again, learn from what China did. What fucking Vietnam did. I know they don’t actually care for people suffering because they turn around and say, well actually very few people will die and even then only those with weak immune systems and even then some deaths are unpreventable so we-

      Aaaargh.

very few people will die and even then only those with weak immune systems

That reasoning is positively satanic. The implicit message is that killing off some of the elderly, the sick and the handicapped, some of the least cost-effective citizens, is actually a good thing.

I know! It's shocking to actually hear people express these opinions with no remorse or shame or empathy. That too from otherwise "liberal" people.

    Are any states doing well?

Kerala has always been good about these things right?

From what I know, Kerala is also going through this crisis like the rest of the states. They are better than most, especially Maharashtra and Delhi, but given that they can't isolate themselves from the rest of the states, they're also suffering in a similar way.

Same as everywhere else, really. From what I know, Kerala is also facing historic number of cases and it doesn't seem as if they're faring any better than the rest of us. I think they have performed better than most other Indian states, especially the bigger ones like Maharashtra and Delhi, but they aren't isolated from the rest in any meaningful way so it isn't really possible for them to escape what the rest of the country goes through.
