However my favourite bands are They Might Be Giants, The Smiths and the Mountain Goats and so my taste is very much in question generally, as users on this website remind me whenever music taste comes up.

Nah, you're just being honest. Nothing wrong with liking Beatles pop tunes! The point is that you're not pretending they're something else than that.
