While apartheid South Africa was under sanctions and not even France or the USA would give them military equipment, Israel supplied them with arms and gave them the equipment and training to make their own military weapons. There's a reason why the standard military service rifle was, and is, a locally produced IMI Galil, and why apartheid era fighter jets like the Atlas Cheetah (locally upgraded Mirage 3) looked identical to the Israeli IAI Kfir (Israeli upgraded mirage 5) fighter jets.
