Israel has been an apartheid state for quite a while. While apartheid South Africa was under sanctions and not even France or the USA would give them military equipment, Israel supplied them with arms and gave them the equipment and training to make their own military weapons. There's a reason why the standard military service rifle was, and is, a locally produced IMI Galil, and why apartheid era fighter jets like the Atlas Cheetah (locally upgraded Mirage 3) looked identical to the Israeli IAI Kfir (Israeli upgraded mirage 5) fighter jets.
I mean, they're also China's second largest supplier of arms.

It's very impossible to have a discussion about anything that's related to Israel in Germany for historical reasons.
If you want to dive deeper: look up the anti-Deutsche-movement, an "left-wing" counter-culture current in Germany which basically advocates that everything Germany does is wrong and Germans should all kill themselves, and Israel is the best country in the world. I'm not making that up, it's very weird.
