The bill by Gray says school systems could authorize yoga if they choose. Yoga done in school would be limited to poses and stretches, and all poses would have to have English names. The use of chanting, mantras and teaching the greeting “namaste” would be forbidden.

I mean I always looked at all of the dumb cali-crackers that did that as fucking dweebs doing a cultural appropriation as a means of financially profiteering by mystifying and orientalizing stretching to winemoms and girl bosses.

Actually the more I think about it the entire western yoga scene is a gigantic act of cultural appropriation and bastardization of a section of Hindu and Bodhisattvic culture and traditions for the sake of peddling snake oil new age spirituality to rinse people of their cash.

      Pretty much on the nose.

The rub is that yoga is also good for stretching and toning muscles and improving circulation. So you've got the Scylla of Eurocentrism on one hand on the Charybdis of cultural appropriation on the other mixed up with something a lot of people can actually benefit from.

It's another situation where our society would be immeasurably bettered if there were more people with literacy in cultural materialism and fewer entrenched idpol essentialists flinging their shit at each other.
