Bit old news from earlier May, but just saw this now. And while I am pro-abolition and etc etc, I say good fuckin riddance. it's rare enough for Roma to ever see any justice.
Jäger first insulted Romani people with racist epithets and then used a broken bottle to assault a 28-year-old Romani man who was with his girlfriend and children. The attacker caused lacerations to the victim.
Jäger insulted Romani people in racist terms by shouting "Fucking cikáni to the gas chambers, cikáni to the gas chambers!", saying that he wanted to murder "cikáni" with a shotgun and yelling: "The cikáni should die!" A 28-year-old Romani man who was there with his girlfriend and children objected to the insults.
The defendant had a criminal record, having been sentenced previously to one year in prison because of his sympathies for a movement to suppress human rights and freedoms. Despite having confessed to the crime, he confirmed his racist convictions even after Monday's verdict, shouting in the direction of the journalists who were present: "This is all a lie. The cigáni are lying. The black mug should die."
:romani:
my czech family fought the nazis primarily because of how they treated their romani and ethnically diverse neighbors :soviet-heart:
before the war they would share a vegetable garden with them and made friends that way, and like everyone else on their road :( during the war they planted bombs near nazi outposts, their favorite was sending one of our 90+ year old family members with blue eyes and could speak german on a walk down the street to plant it lmao

guy with german last name shouting about gas chambers is probably the only reason he got this sentence. i do have experience knowing that you can assault nazis in czechia and the cops will laugh at them if they report you, though they dont actively root out the problem well enough. there is a law that can imprison nazis but it doesnt rehab them at all or tackle why they become nazis in the first place. czechoslovakia was better at this but still not the best for romani
but hey at least they didnt let psychoes like the national party into government
and as an aside as an american czech it is very strange to hear romani be called 'black' in czech. my brain cant process it right at all
Maybe they have one of those "we'll double check at the end and then maybe release you" systems?
