My guess is that it's because we have merged entertainment spaces with political spaces with pornographic spaces.
A kid can not use reddit to learn about their favourite game without being exposed to political viewpoints or porn frequently. The result is exposure and understanding of serious political discussion.
My armchair theory is they are stewing in the same media environment we (people not in 3rd grade) are, and as such are dealing with the same memes/cultural signifiers as us older people use.
Like, despite efforts you still end up with 13 y/os accessing the same social media/forums as 35 y/os.
If you play minecraft, you use /r/minecraft, you engage with reddit, you get politicised.

I see absolutely no ethical problems with political education and agitation at any age. We are not grooming people into a religion. The fascists on the other hand? They genuinely are grooming people.
The only caveat I have is that I think kids should just get to be kids without adult influences. But we live in a new era. These kids will genuinely never get that, they have phones from like 5 to 8 years old and get onto major internet content within their first couple of years online.
If they're very-online kids they will end up with an online education much faster than the education system itself.
Yeah my time in high school people were almost entirely detached from politics and those who cared were nerds, and not the cool kind. Very sad actually
It's gotta be the result of growing up 100% online. The most politically radical things I saw at that age were Cartoon Network shows, now younger and younger people are getting politically active
When I grew up, TV shows would run ads saying "you can do your part to save the environment! if we all took 10 less minutes in the shower, we could save enough water for the whole country to drink for a day" and now 10 year olds can learn that stopping climate apocalypse has been all but a lost cause since before their birth
