I really like the setting and think they absolutely nailed the atmosphere and city itself.
The problem is that they did nothing at all with it. It's a set. A diorama. A really interesting diorama but there's literally no sandbox whatsoever. The game does not need to be an open world game because they have literally done nothing with the open world.
It's a canvas ready to be finished in my opinion and I am looking forwards to modders actually finishing it. If modders go at it in the same way they go at Skyrim then this will be excellent in the next 1-2 years and I'll be able to essentially make it into anything I want it to be.
I was super hyped for it and super let down :<
So much of the resources and knowledge of the video game production process has been sunk into concept art, 3D modelling, and graphics rendering so of course that part's going to be good. Unfortunately basically nothing else is developed in AA/A games which is what a cerebral cyberpunk RPG requires. It never had a chance.
I mean, even saying this the open world should be on par with expectations for an open world modern-era game.
Even someone dies in the street Trauma Team should show up. If a fire happens private fire fighting services should show up, fight each other over putting out the fire, or argue with the building owner about paperwork and insurance. Cops should be DRIVING to a site not magically spawning 20feet from the player. Where are the car chases? Where are the random assassins? Where are rival gang wars for territory? Where is the sandbox?
We've had this shit in open world games since GTA 3. GTA 3 is literally a better sandbox than Cyberpunk. It doesn't meet the bar for an open world game 15 years ago, let alone what an open world game should be today.
I absolutely adore exploring the city and seeing the interactions of the NPCs and that's about it. It's so frustrating.
Hopefully Rockstar deliver as per usual. This game was so disappointing. All they had to do was produce GTA but with this art aesthetic and they failed horribly at even that.
The people don't even fucking run away when you start shooting in a restaurant.. The vehicles don't even drive around you if you stop in the middle of the street. It's awful on a level that is hard to describe without seeming unwell.
The game does not need to be an open world game because they have literally done nothing with the open world.
Honestly, I've been saying this about Witcher 3 for years. Literally nothing to discover in the open world beyond a bunch of already marked POIs that either give a skill point or a crafting recipe. I just don't know why people are surprised to see the same in Cyberpunk.
Witcher 3 never billed itself as like an "open world simulator" like gta it was always gonna be a bunch of decent quests and narratives scattered in an open world
Traveling in TW3 was actually fun. Usually because you'd stumble on a random side quest on your way to another quest and as you cleared those the game world got a bit brighter and people started recognizing you. It didn't require a lot to make the travel aspect fun. Just an occasional acknowledgment that you'd done things.
I think we expected them to like at least meet the bar GTA 3/Vice City set decades ago for sandbox interactions in a modern city open world but they didn't even come close.
fwiw it includes the xbox, ps4, ps5, nintendo(????) and pc versions and it's all pre-compilation of course. The game itself it like 60 gigs.
So what exactly are people gonna do with this? Mod it? I feel like this would be so much for any one person to go through. Why, you'd have to work as group, dare I say collectivize....
There are some mods with pretty insane team sizes. There's quite a couple of Hearts of Iron mods with teams bigger than a lot of actual game dev teams for example. Would be rad for something similar to happen here.
But how many are active devs vs have contributed a couple times? Of course by the nature of open source projects you can end up with way more contributors, but that's not quite the same.
true, it's mostly just a cool anecdote. most if the Kaiserreich devs just make lore and events for regions or even single countries.
:sicko-yes:
