Yeah alcohol is cool until it's literally your whole life and everyone around you is a drunk and you can't fucking think about anything else besides needing to quit or getting fucked up. Also you hurt all the time
If you drink enough you wake up in a trashed room with no memory of your previous life and a hanged corpse in the backyard.
I'm not saying weed never causes problems (I've seen the damage it can to to people with schizophrenia), but it's frankly crazy to lump it in with alcohol, opiates, and heroin. The LD50 chart alone makes this very clear.
Something doesn’t have to kill you to fuck up your life.
I have a family member who was habitually addicted to weed and it triggered psychosis in him. He did not start smoking until long after being 25.
I understand this is not typical for most people but when it happens, it’s incredibly harmful and can lead to a lot of pain for the user and the people in their life.
You dont get trips on weed. It can trigger psychosis in a small percentage of people who were already susceptible, just like peanuts or seafood can cause death for people with allergies.
It is, comparably, extremely safe to consume.
That chart is about fatal dose to usual dose though, this is just one out of many factors. Like, the normal daily dose of water is not that many times smaller than the fatal dose of water, doesn't mean water is dangerous, and the inverse is also the case. Not saying weed is dangerous, it's not compared to other stuff, but there's a few more things going on.
I've seen alcohol kill one person and ruin the lives of at least 5 other people. It's probably the most dangerous drug around because it's so available.
My dad does the taking a couple of months off thing, he is not physically dependent, but he drinks a lot normally and it makes him miserable. It's a weird kind of dependence. Imo it's better to just avoid drinking when you're not with friends than doing the days off thing. Besides, I think that the fact that he does this tricks him into thinking he is fine when he isn't, it's just that he doesn't get any withdrawal because he is not physically dependent on it.
Drug discussions are really really fucking lame cause there's so many different types of drugs with different effects that you just can't compare them together. Doing drugs is fine enough for some of the tamer stuff but when you're on the shit that melts your brain and makes you do literally anything for just another hit maybe it's not the same approach that we need to take for both there anymore now is it?
I know part of it is just a counter reaction against the "war on drugs" and how drug usage has been used as an excuse to cover up racism and slavery but there are still some things that do not and should not be promoted in any form. Reforming drug policies to not be abusive and actually help addicts is important, but it's also not going to be the same as "all drugs are cool let's provide every single thing we know as a personal choice" type deal either.
Wait does that have something to do with disabilities or something? I thought it was just like "boring" or "uncool" something around those lines.
it used to be a word for people with messed up legs I think, I think it's not that strict outside of !mentalhealth@hexbear.net but it's nice to look out for anyways.
Huh I never knew that I'll try to be more careful in the future.
I’m sorry for what you’re going through comrade.
A lot of people around me have or have had addiction issues, including my partner who is a recovered alcoholic. I understand what you mean. For many people that’s a constantly daily struggle that never goes away it just gets easier to manage.
It definitely looks different once you’ve experienced first hand or through a close loved one
I wouldn't expect people to stop saying "do crimes" because my dad got locked up for doing it.
Do drugs if you want to, people. Enough of this D.A.R.E. "if u inhale a single marijuana u gonna die" shit in here.
What kind of crime are we talking about?
"Do Crimes" is a cute response. But "drive drunk, run red lights, and kill people in head on collisions" less so.
Drug use is a crutch used by people in pain. It's not the sort of shit to valorize. Addiction and abuse even less so.
Just like "Do drugs" doesn't typically mean "Shoot up heroin", "Do crimes" typically doesn't mean "Drive drunk"
Knowing the difference is basic maturity.
Just like “Do drugs” doesn’t typically mean “Shoot up heroin”,
What?
Hey rev left just put out a great episode about addition. It's a very good interview with a former addict and now neuroscientist. https://revolutionaryleftradio.libsyn.com/never-enough-the-neuroscience-and-experience-of-addiction
yeah, i can't believe i have to say this, but doing heroin isn't cool folks
