These days most games try to make hints like that sound as non-gamey as they can. In ye olden times supporting characters would just call Solid Snake and tell him to push the ACTION BUTTON to do various things
My favorite is in Pikmin, where Olimar just says "I have an overwhelming urge to approach and press the A button"
