Anyone read this nifty little triology? I was wondering what your thoughts are. I hate it. But I plan on finishing it because I want to see how bad it gets, and Im a little bit of a masochist.

My major gripe is the massive creep incel vibe the author gives. The book is packed with weird sex scenes, that are absolutely not necessary for the plot. And what makes it really bad is that these often involve characters with considerable age differences, often one being underage. This combined with the sexualised descriptions of underage women (its always women), and the "guy who has touched a boob once" style made me quit the book several times.

The politics arent much better - even though we are talking about the far future, the prevalent system is still some dumb version of free capitalism with planets with all kinds of ideologies and systems. The funny thing is that even in the cases of self-sufficient and obviously prosperous habitats, they still have to do capitalism. And when it comes to the broader description of ideologies, politics and government actions - it feels like the author is presenting his masturbations on enlightened centrism. That sometimes leads to very weird moments. For example at some point some of the supposedly good guys discuss how the regime of the bad guys will collapse, because it is radical and autocratic and forces people into submission . Same people are part of a fucking kingdom that does the same things, but its somehow good. And you can see it is not presented as a "look at the hypocrisy and hubris of these characters" but it feels like he honestly thought that.

Another one - one of the bad characters is kidnapped by the military forces of the good characters. He has established earlier how our good characters do all kind of obviously shitty things and as governments dont have problems with disappearing people. Yet when the kidnapped character demands a lawyer and a trial, suddenly its a big deal that she be granted one, and her rights respected, even though she is held captive in a black site.

There are many other annoying moments, like a weird badly placed joke on political correctness, all (two) gay characters are evil and pedophiles, all the planets are oddly based on ethnicities, there is an odd pro-religious and pro-conservative current and so on. ... so yeah ...
