Also using a cutting edge distro (Arch or Manjaro) is asking for trouble. Which desktop environment did you go with?

i went with mint which may or may not have been a mistake, its all nice and easy now its installed, but after all the dual boot drama with bios vs uefi i ended up having to reinstall it five times because every time i tried to install the recommended nvidia drivers it locked up completely and refused to even boot, somehow the solution to my system refusing to boot was to switch my monitor cable from displayport to hdmi lol wtf

Glad it's working, mint's fine. If you upgrade anytime soon don't buy anything nvidia tho, fuck nvidia.

Yeah idk, I can usually update my computer to no issue at all. It might have just been familiarity and not having touched it in years, but installing Kubuntu on a friend's computer ran me into a couple weird issues I couldn't figure out.

All distros got terminals but arch is cutting edge so it's only recommended for experienced linux users

Depends, is your idea of fun fiddling with your OS?

as in for hobby computing, yeah arch is pretty cool. being cutting edge, i've had to debug shit before (specifically, gnome 3 decided to break how dead keys were supposed to work, which for a good two hours looked like something was wrong with my keyboard localization until i realized KDE applications worked fine and googled "gnome 3 dead keys") but like this has been once in like almost two years of using arch on this machine. it's remarkable considering i have nvidia optimus which was a FUCKING PAIN in ubuntu. wouldn't use it for work stuff, then again, i can't really use anything but macOS for work, so there you go.
