I hold to the idea that the future is better just by virtue of our surviving to see it. Every age has its struggles, and not every society survives theirs (see - Bronze Age Collapse, Mayan Classical Collapse, W. Roman Collapse, the multiple times Chinese states have fallen apart, Black Death, etc.).
But it's through those collapses and failures that new social paradigms are created and the potential for a better world can be nurtured.
I know the band can be cringe, but I like the Gogol Bordello verse about this idea: "There were never any 'good old days;' they are today, they are tomorrow. It's a stupid thing we say, cursing tomorrow with sorrow."
I like this line, it gives me a bit of hope.
