The heatwave in my area and the one on the opposite side of the country has me spooked. It feels like shit is speeding up and within a few years I'm going to look back on 2021 as the good times. :doomer:
I always remember that as a kid there was a magical time around mid-September to early October when fall would set in and the leaves would change with the weather. You could smell fall in the air. It was always an exciting feeling on that first day of fall feeling when I was walking to my bus stop and you could just sense that it was almost time for Halloween and getting to wear cozy sweaters. Now the weather doesn’t change until mid November and “fall” only lasts for a few weeks before you’re plunged into winter. It’s shocking how quickly this change has happened and how no one else seems to notice it. Fall’s always had a special place in my heart and now it just doesn’t even exist anymore. It’s really quite depressing
Yes we used to have a pronounced fall and spring in my area too, now it feels like we just go from winter to summer and summer to winter. Spring and summer used to be my favorite. I have good memories of nice spring days coming home from school, opening the windows and playing games on my computer, excited for the summer to come. Now I dread the summer. The temperate 80 degree days with low humidity seem to be vanishing.
Big mood, there was a 115 degree day where I live recently and I've kind of given up hope anything is going to be done about climate change at all
What sends me into an absolute panic is that we're going to hand off fixing climate change to bozos like Musk and Bezos, we're going to fool ourselves that big tech will fix it and it's going to backfire spectacularly I'm sure.
I'm sure they're going to push out some shit that will put a band-aid on the problem, probably buying us a little time, if it works, just long enough to get everything set up to leave earth for a space colony or mars.
Personally I doubt they’ll even do that. They’ve got enough wealth to push out a PR piece every six months to look like they’re doing something. Rest of the time will still be spent living in luxury, and once they die it won’t matter, world ends with them as far as they’re concerned.
If you’ve got $100 billion to spend over the remaining 40 years of your life why would you care about the little people anymore?
What little hope I have left I'm putting with China to figure something out or at the very least buy us more time.
Pretty much this.
I don’t even think the future will be that “glamorous” for billionaires either. We don’t have the infrastructure or tech for these fucks to run off into space. Most will die with no regrets in their walled compounds, a few might die from random suicide bombings etc. The coolest we’ll get is stacking burning tires in front of bunker air intakes and butchering a few as they emerge.
It just floors me how us, the rabble, are expected to lay down and die. Neoliberalism is a fuck and has poisoned our minds. Jesus, how is there not constant riots and political upheaval over this?
Logging off just isn’t an option when you have no other community to fill the voids in your life.
This reminds me of something that black red guard on youtube once said, about how you have to get everyday people in your life, not just online, talking about socialism. I guess I have a bit of hope in how much leftism has made a comeback in the states, at least online, a lot of people are talking about it, enough to get the right nervous.
I don't think the space stuff is a realistic option. Whatever the capitalists do to fuck up earth, dealing with our is going to be several orders of magnitude easier than making Mars inhabitable for humans.
All the Mars shit is just five year old L. Ron Musk playing space with real rockets.
The thing about humans is that they’re earthlings, and will remain earthlings.
I’ve kind of given up hope anything is going to be done about climate change at all
"we've tried nothing and we're all out of options!" but were you ever actually hoping for anything to begin with? The left has no goals except politely asking Exxon Mobile to be more greenwashed and woke
do you have any pointers to where I can find more info on the regenerative ag movement?
I hold to the idea that the future is better just by virtue of our surviving to see it. Every age has its struggles, and not every society survives theirs (see - Bronze Age Collapse, Mayan Classical Collapse, W. Roman Collapse, the multiple times Chinese states have fallen apart, Black Death, etc.).
But it's through those collapses and failures that new social paradigms are created and the potential for a better world can be nurtured.
I know the band can be cringe, but I like the Gogol Bordello verse about this idea: "There were never any 'good old days;' they are today, they are tomorrow. It's a stupid thing we say, cursing tomorrow with sorrow."
But it’s through those collapses and failures that new social paradigms are created and the potential for a better world can be nurtured.
I like this line, it gives me a bit of hope.
Eh, I'm at the point I'm just embracing it. It's over, so what. I never wanted kids, I'll be dead before it gets really bad. I'm living in a place that's probably gonna be one of the last corners of the world to get fucked so I'm just going to enjoy the world while I can.
I'd just advise everyone to do the same, don't have kids, encourage others not to, move someplace with a more resilient ecosystem, drink, some weed, hike, have casual sex, die. There's really no point it making yourself miserable if there's nothing you can do.
I've decided to seriously rethink my priorities about a career and will probably try to just live frugally out of a camper and travel. I want to see the genuinely beautiful parts of this country before it turns into a unrecognizable hellscape.
I think the one on the west coast is, or at the least breaking records. We broke a record yesterday in my area. We also had record breaking snowfall in the winter. Shit feels like it's ramping up at an alarming pace.
Once in a millenia event in the PNW.
I put out 2.5 gallons of water yesterday and the animals drank it all.
