Thought I'd post this here after reading about Hillary giving the kiss of death to some rich lib prosecutor. This is a documentary series about Larry Krasner, former public defender and the current Philadelphia District Attorney. He's one of a growing number of local prosecutors attempting to roll back mass incarceration.
Local DAs prosecute the vast majority of crimes and have virtually unlimited discretion as to what cases should be pursued and how to pursue them. Because upwards of 90% of cases plead out instead of going to trial, there isn’t too much judges or juries can do to interfere. They can effectively decriminalize drugs and sex work, and bring charges against capitalist interests that are often above the law (e.g., landlords). They’re also in a unique position to fight police departments, as they can hamstring a cop’s career by dismissing the cases they bring, and they can prosecute police misconduct instead of sweeping it under the rug.
It's a close-up look at taking decarceration policies and trying to make the rubber meet the road. His office is also clearing a path for DA candidates who are at least using the term "abolition." It's a promising trend to follow.
