I think it's most likely just some dumb chud guy's idea of how to run a business. All business today is about marketing your brand, so what's better than only having one brand to market to the whole u.s. armed forces? Marketing brands to the water guys (navy, marines, coast guard), the land guys (army), and the air guys (air force) all separately.
