The key is to take up the middle of the lane so no one passes you, while also turning often enough that the drivers behind you don't develope road rage.
i was scared to ride at first too, but as long as you wear a helmet and (depending on pedestrian traffic) stay on the sidewalk when you need to, it's really not too bad unless you can't keep yourself balanced
if you can afford it converting your bike to electric might be helpful. you shouldn't need to do ridiculously high power (some ppl use like 700W motors) to make riding up slopes easier

In most of the US, bike riding isn't advisable. We need to have bike lanes mandatory in urban and suburban areas.
I'm not in the US, I'm somewhere worse for bikes though lol

It's not viable for me anyways, I live in a ridiculously uneven place and even a 3km trip with the bike is exhausting.
