I mean GTA has been surprisingly decent on social issues, so ofc conservatives will cry about it now that they know they can get money from being a whiny baby.

San Andreas had a black protagonist and the main antagonists were cops (and to an extent a CIA operative coercing CJ to do domestic terrorism). One of the major supporting characters is a blind Chinese man. Can you imagine Shapino et al's reaction if it came out in 2023?

Woke Rockstar virtue signals to communists by forcing a black protagonist allied with disabled Chinese NPC to kill white people! The most prominent white person that's not an antagonist is a liberal anti government pro drug hippie!

GTA 6 could be half as subversive as GTA SA and get ten times the reactionary outcry.

I remember when the PC version of SA came out and almost immediately there was a mod to turn CJ white what-the-hell

This is pretty funny because a white CJ might make sense in a rural, southern setting (especially Appalachia), but it takes place in a hood in LA, so the story is just about a white guy who hangs out with black gangsters

At the time I thought, ”sure, you can make CJ white, but what about….everything else in the game? I don't think someone who doesn't want to play as black man is going to like the rap radio stations, black main characters, outright references to the LA riots, etc.”

IIRC there were mods to make the rest of the gang into white skinheads. Gmers being gmers.

4 was about an ex-Yugoslav soldier trying to start over with the American dream and realizing it’s full of shit and he has to go back to his old ways to survive

5 was more goofy, but still about infighting between intelligence agencies. There’s also the whole Illuminati thing, but again, just largely goofy.

Vice City I don’t remember all too much

Vice City was just Scarface. I think there was some stuff that made fun of yuppie excess 80s capitalism.

GTA was so much more fun when it was riffing on past decades and not trying to be a serious crime drama or whatever.

You can just wait a decade and the games will turn into period pieces automatically, see GTAIV and GTAV think-about-it

The late 2000s and early 2010s don't feel as interesting to me, and the games don't lean into being caricatures of those periods like VC and SA.
