Letter from the Editor
When I asked the Hexbear Community for collaborators on a zine. I was not surprised at the enthusiastic response to this project. But asking for collaborators and bringing a project to fruition requires active partnerships and vision. And one might ask, what is the vision for this zine?
This zine attempts to wade into "the discourse" with a distinct hexbearian tone and approach. Politics, technology, culture, current events, and anything else that the cursed discourse has to offer. But it is also an attempt to slow down. Let those topics marinate, engage with them more thoroughly.
My desire to collaborate on this zine with other members of the site, while fruitful have also left me at an impasse. I am not a terribly good graphic designer and I have felt the ticking of the clock get louder and more persistent. It is wrong for me to hold on to well-written and interesting pieces and photo essays in the hopes I'll wake up with enough graphic design sense to wrangle my way through InDesign. Therefore, I am putting all the articles up in /c/effort with the name of the author and the other communities they could be shared in. I am trying not to let perfect be the enemy of good, and folks I think we got some damn good stuff. If there are any enterprising graphic designers on the site who would like to turn these pieces into a complete zine, please do, I will send you all of the files. In the meantime please enjoy what we have to offer.
Entering the discourse is also an opportunity to enter the "IRL" with a zine that folks can download and print out for themselves, share with comrades, leave at public spaces, or use it to piss off your conservative relatives by radicalizing your niblings. It might bring more users and members to Hexbear, or place us on Joe's anti-Radicals Radar. This is all worthwhile work, for the cause.
The Disk Horse would be nothing without the willing and enthusiastic volunteers. Any missed opportunities, mistakes, or problematic decisions lie with me, the editor. I hope you enjoy nonetheless, and that in wading into the discourse: we find our own voice while simultaneously giving Hexbear's users a megaphone to drown out the fascists and their word vomits.
