Academia is a serious brainworm promoter. Weird, fringe, niche views are highly rewarded, because being the one person who believes this one weird thing and will argue for it is a very easy route to farming publications.

My dumbass but beloved friend who joined the navy because he literally needed a place to live is now going to school for psychology and because he's a veteran he apparently is just flushed through school with little regard for his actual ability.
He wants to work as a psychologist in the navy because it's easy, pays well, and as he said if a sailor comes to him feeling suicidal he's just gonna be like "yeah, idk dude, maybe"
