          probably the worst part of the reforms by far, as in the early years coverage in rural areas (the majority of the population) dropped down to about 5% from over 90%

          of course, like everything before the reforms it was extremely precarious, maoist china was no cuba: they were lacking funds, lacking equipment, specialized medicine was shit, and so on, but at least basic health care was freely available to pretty much every person (which was enough to greatly increase life expectancy as most deaths come from pretty simple stuff happening during infancy)
