the Catalan independence movement is a huge petite bourgeois bullshit movement. their core argument is they pay too much in tax to the central government, when Barcelona is one of the biggest hubs of tourism in Europe, but the bougie middle class don't want 'thier' money to go to Extramadura and Andalucia.
fuck the Castillian state, I am aware of their history and their crimes, but the current Catalan independence movement is a petite bourgeoisie attempt to lower taxes and cut expenditures, it's not a national liberation movement, it's not left wing, and leftists really need to stop tying it to 1936.
"The main argument put forward by Catalan separatists is that their wealthy region, which contains 16% of Spain’s population but generates 20% of the country’s GDP, would do better economically as an independent state - a view that has gained traction since Spain entered recession in 2008 but is disputed by many economists. A particular grievance is that Catalans pay more in taxes than they receive in transfers and investments from Madrid: “España nos roba” - “Spain robs us” - is one of the separatists’ most popular slogans. Quite how much more is unclear because of Spain’s complex system of budget transfers, but three years ago a Reuters report found the gap was around €12 billion ($13.4 billion)."
literally their MAIN SLOGAN is 'Spain robs us'. they may as well start chucking tea into the fucking harbour and chanting 'no taxation without representation'
right, like fuck Spain :spain-cool: but an independent Catalan republic is just going to become another liberal European country, founded upon the idea of shirking off a social responsibility to helping the poor in their own country. nothing about this is left wing
All their leaders are socialists and the left there supports the movement though.
But you do make good points! And very materially based. Pretty convincing to me. My points here are more to be Devil’s advocate to see if you have good counter-arguments against them like the one above. Because i am inclined to support the movement but i might just be being a :LIB:
They seem like they want something between a Scandinavian social democracy and communism, depending on which part of the movement you ask.
Also from a purely geostrategic perspective, isn’t further Balkanization of European states a good thing more generally from an anti-imperialist/AES state’s perspective?
