western outlets saying china is “censoring” xyz are hugely overstating how impactful it is, unless I’m totally misreading the VPN situation over there

I visited China circa 2011 and could easily access whatever I wanted outside the firewall with a basic VPN. Could have changed since then, but it wasn't an issue for me at the time.
