That's actually why we have the variant names like Delta, beta, etc. Instead of listing the variants by country of origin. It's an attempt by the WHO to try reduce xenophobia and stigma around reporting variants. Still doesn't stop racist media outlets from doing so unfortunately
Yeah there was some movement to label the Delta variant the Indian variant but it didn't catch on. But look at all the stuff around China at the beginning of the pandemic for a clear example of this behaviour
The official justification is that they don't trust these countries governments to verify vaccine status and vaccine cards/passes. So they'll definitely apply the same rules to antivaxx hotspots in the west, right?
Yeah it was a big controversy because some people that got the Indian manufactured AZ (covishield) due to supply chain weirdness weren't allowed to get a vaccine passport in Europe or something.
Every time. It sucks no much.
They do realize shit like this just fuels anti-vaxxers, right?
And xenophobia. If a new outbreak happens, they know just who to blame. Not the MPs who were out spitting in each others' mouths.

It's like they're playing hot potato with the variants until they can safely and definitively lay blame on a country they don't like.

:bugs-no:
Just :ukkk: things 🙃
:eu-cool:
Yeah according to the EU, AstraZeneca vaccines manufactured in India =/= AstraZeneca made in the EU. They're just as guilty of this nonsense
Oh that's news to me. :agony-shivering:
